Many parents wait until the last minute when their kid is enrolling in colleges to begin talking about college majors. Some don't even talk to their children about it at all. This is a huge mistake especially with all the drop out of college rates at an all time high, mostly I predict is due to a poorly chosen major or field of study. Today I'm going to talk about 3 different types of college majors that your child may be interested in as well as the pros and cons of each. Computer Science. Ah, the almightly computer science degree. Many high schoolers select this degree thinking that designing games is all about fun and games. Unfortunately, many do not consider the fact that computer science involves A LOT of math. You'll be doing heavy math algorithms in game development if you go down this route. My recommendation is, don't choose this major if you want to spend the rest of your career designing video games. Choose this major if you love math and have a passion for finding logical errors in programs. Nevertheless, this is the perfect degree for introverts or people who rather work with systems than other humans. Music Yikes! That's my reaction to anyone who tells me they want to study music. The pro may seem obvious, you'll get paid to spend the rest of your life playing musical instruments, right? WRONG. Most music majors graduate to do teaching because they do not have any other options. Thankfully, music teachers are pretty high in demand, contrary to popular belief. On top of that, music is one of the most difficult majors out there. You're trying to put abstract auditory concepts onto paper and you'll be spending 4 years trying to do so while preparing for deadlines and concerts. In fact, I would even say that music is one of the most difficult majors out there. The only exception is if you already have some sort of background in music before going in, such as having the ability to play several instruments. Nevertheless, this degree will open your horizons and make you much more creative and believe it or not, you'll learn how to work with other people too because music is heavily dependent on synchronizing yourself with another person or an entire group during a performance. Applied Mathematics I wanted to throw this major into the mix because it's extremely underrated. I would even say that this is perhaps the most useful degree out there. Companies are always looking to hire those with excellent math skills. From here you'll be able to do many different fields including government projects, consulting firms, medical device companies, and more! This is one of the more flexible non-business related degrees that can open your door to many things. Of course, this means you'll need to be good with numbers and learn how to be a wiz at Microsoft Excel. And there we have it folks, three very contrasting fields of study. The whole point is not to choose between these 3 but to give your child an idea of what's out there, and let him or her decide on his or her own. Do not force a major upon your child, but at the same time, allow him or her to understand that a wrong major means being underpaid for the rest of his or her life. Good luck!
